The Wealden Green Kitchen

Project

This kitchen had been twelve years in the making β€” not in construction, but in thought. When the owners first moved into their 16th-century Wealden farmhouse, they knew the cramped, cold north-facing kitchen had to go. The plan was always to move it to the generous link room that connected the original house to a 1950s extension. It had light, space, and overlooked the garden β€” but getting there would mean major building work and careful planning. Being a listed home only added to the challenge.

By the time work began, the vision was fully formed. The room lent itself to a long island, minimal wall cupboards, and a sense of openness. A large walk-in pantry was included from the start, allowing the main fridge-freezer to be tucked out of sight. That freed up space in the kitchen itself for a more traditional feel β€” an under-counter fridge, a wine cooler, and a bank of deep pan drawers that handle the everyday essentials with ease.

The Everhot sits at the head of the L-shaped run, and symmetry was key. The wall and base cupboards on either side took time to get just right, but it was worth the effort β€” they bring balance to the whole room. A pair of countertop concertina cupboards sit neatly at either end, offering practical storage without disturbing the lines of the space.

Ceramics were a big part of the brief. A dresser was designed specifically to display a long-held collection of spongeware, and open shelving at the end of the island creates another focal point, allowing favourite pieces to be rotated in and out as the seasons shift.

The cabinetry is our bespoke Period English-style, painted in Vert de Terre by Farrow & Ball β€” one of many green shades tested, but the one that felt calm, soft and enduring.

In the utility, the same care was taken. No wall cupboards, clean lines, and a full-height storage cupboard that’s become the envy of every visitor. When last-minute pipework threatened to ruin the clean finish, an open shelf unit was designed to cover it β€” now home to yet more pottery and proving that sometimes the practical solutions turn out to be the loveliest.

Painted in New White by Farrow & Ball, the utility feels connected but calm, with a gentle contrast to the green of the main kitchen. Every decision in this home was well considered, personal, and built to last β€” and you can feel it the moment you walk in.
