Apsley House, Bath

Project

We were delighted to work alongside Claire & Nick to create a wonderful period kitchen and scullery for their home in Bath. Affording stunning views and a traditional setting, the family opted for no other than our Period English-style cabinets. The house, a Regency limestone Italianate style villa, was built in 1832 allegedly for the Duke of Wellington, as a place to stay when visiting Bath – hence the name Apsley House.

Choosing lighter colours in this kitchen encourages the natural light to brighten up the space effortlessly, the main units hand painted in Farrow & Ball’s ‘Joa’s White’ is paired with ‘Oxford Stone’ for the island (having two or more colours in your kitchen can add a small amount of contrast to zone different areas of the space). The large island provides an area to prepare and serve food, whilst also accommodating useful open shelving on one side allowing easy access to plates, pots, and pans.

A range of burnished brass knobs and handles were used throughout the kitchen. Opting for Appliance Pulls for the larger doors, Bournville Knobs for the smaller cabinets and Withenshaw Cup Pulls for drawers, all sourced from our partner Armac Martin. Using a mix of copper and gold décor really brings this beautiful kitchen together.

The impressive scullery used our more simple Shaker Style cabinets, hand painted in ‘Dark Brunswick Green’ by Little Greene and complimented by an antique Welsh dresser. High ceilings meant that the cupboards could be made floor to ceiling providing maximum usage of the space, with a hidden pantry equipped with appliances and shelving to store essentials. The scullery was designed to be an area with many uses; to store dirty boots after an evening walk, to have a spot of afternoon tea looking over the stunning views, and to store and prepare food. The room is masterfully finished off with copper fittings, a bespoke sink and a utilitarian tap; all tying in nicely with the main kitchen’s copper accessories.
