Rima had been wanting to swap her open-plan dining room and kitchen around for some time but couldn’t see where she could accommodate her American Fridge Freezer. She eventually had the idea of making the downstairs bathroom smaller: cutting off the space used by the ‘downstairs shower’ with a wall in the toilet and reopening the space into the kitchen. This provided the first step to creating her dream kitchen. The fireplace was removed and replaced with an Aga – meaning she could then use the chimney for the extractor fan. Above the Aga antiqued mirror glass was used to create an illusion of space. The lighting becomes very important as the kitchen would now be on the darker side of the room. 10 daylight spots and 2 pendants were installed over the island and LED strip lighting was added under the cupboards and behind the Georgian Canopy. To warm the room up, the walls were painted in Dorchester Pink (Light) from Farrow & Ball, and a White Nights by Boen floor runs through the kitchen, joining up the kitchen, utility and dining room.

The dining table sits under the skylight in what used to be the kitchen, alongside a glass-fronted dresser and bar looking onto the garden. The kitchen island and the dresser in the dining room were painted in Lamp Black by Little Greene, creating statement pieces. The rest of the cabinetry was painted in Little Greens Welcome 109. To complement the units a ‘Blacno Eclipsia’ quartzite worktop was used for the countertops. The dresser and bar area were made to measure piece which was topped with an oak counter to match the oak drawers of the pantry cupboard. To complete the look ancient Bog Oak handles were hand-turned by TWKC with Sparkbrook ends from Armac Martin. Three months on, the family are loving the kitchen. The island provides the perfect place to cook Sunday roasts and bake or the perfect place for her daughter to do her University work. The island will provide the perfect ‘kids table’ when they can have dinner parties with friends, and for now, it is simply the perfect spot to enjoy breakfast.
